Roundels

Here ’roundels’ are defined as any circular or part circular area on our Japanese cloisonne objects with a non-trivial internal design. They are usually one of the most beautiful decorations on the object, and are useful for spotting where two vases or other objects might have had a common maker or workshop. Image reference numbers refer to Object numbers on this website.

NB Smaller circular areas are classified as ‘coins’ and are analysed elsewhere on this site.
